Members Meeting Minutes of Meeting #177                  June 2, 2026

Call to order 1:00 p.m., lighter attendance than usual today, 21 members

AFSA members and guests present: see sign in sheets

Treasurer’s report:

Craig Smith, Treasurer, reported as of 5-30-26 the AFSA Checking account held $27,946.98 and the AFSA Janney investment account held $88,418.33

Committee Reports

  • Legislative: Hooper working on finding a new lobbyist, Joe Saffer to help

Joe mentioned changes in OSHA coming up that will be hard for construction to meet including: Wage history, can’t ask – Paid family leave – heat illness prevention plans

  • Membership: Chris Amorese sent emails for current unpaid members – plans to send out quarterly membership email drive
  • Program: Chris Stone

October 22nd is the date for 2026 seminar at the Chesterfield Training Facility – John Denhardt will be the teacher, Hydraulics, Fire Pumps, NFPA 25

  • Public Relations:

Hooper reported 2 sprinkler saves

  • Social Media Committee:

MaryCatherine new updates on website – please share pics with MC for posting

  • Education/Apprenticeship:

Jeff Lewis talked about the new tech ctr being built in Tidewater.  They will help push DOE to recognize the fire protection program in high schools

  • Golf: Bill Jones reported we are over by one in count presently at 267 golfers, Danielle to send out email for waiting list

8) NextGen:

Dominique task group being built to refresh the Regency mall storefront and help with events in 2027 – they will be hosting the putting contest at the golf tournament again this year

9)Community Projects:  Jeff Lewis

“Home for the Troops” in Mechanicsville key ceremony was May 2nd, Jason Gill attended.  Thank you Jason for great work on this project. Spotsylvania has house #2 in process.

Hermitage Ctr – in the works, summer labor, need a foreman for pipe, etc.

House #2 in also in the works, AutoMist will be installed in that one, Jeff will send out schedules for help with that Henrico project

10)Scholarship: 

       Jason Gill – 4 applicants are being considered and award will be next week

11)Code Assistance:

      Joe nothing new to report

Old and New Business

  1. AFSA National Convention will be held at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Club September 27 – 30 2026.
  2. Two scholarships were discussed by Katie regarding convention – one available for a NEW chapter leader and one for Next Gen
  3. John Denhardt talked about AFSA training programs and apprentice competition
  4. FPC magazine is on the tables – Technical Questions area added by Brant
  5. Joe Saffer suggested a LAST GEN competition in the future to increase attendance and motivate
  6. Next 2026 Board & Member Meeting, September 8th day prior to golf tournament in Williamsburg

50/50 raffle won by Rudy Jones, Winsupply and donated back to the chapter.
